The doctoral school "Natural and Human Sciences: Evolution and Ecology" (ED227 MNHN-SU) was established in 1995

Missions

Missions of the Doctoral School 227: 

  • Admitting and integrating doctoral students within the institutions; 
  • Ensuring that doctoral students are welcomed by research teams under the best conditions to successfully complete their thesis within the allocated three years; 
  • Establishing a thesis charter and supervisory committee to oversee progress; 
  • Supporting doctoral students and supervisors during difficult periods with the help of the doctoral school counsellor; 
  • Offering doctoral students training activities that enhance their scientific knowledge, technical skills, and professional integration after their thesis; 
  • Ensuring that every doctoral student receives training in research ethics and scientific integrity; 
  • Promoting high-quality scientific engagement for doctoral students; 
  • Ensuring compliance with jury requirements and necessary prerequisites (publications, completed training modules) for obtaining their PhD. 

Disciplines

The Doctoral School 227 is interdisciplinary

It covers natural sciences, such as systematics, paleontology, chemistry, geology, ecology, and conservation biology, and human sciences, including archaeology, prehistory, sociology, anthropology, and ethnology. 

ED227 also promotes cross-disciplinary approaches that bridge these two major fields to enhance our understanding of evolutionary, ecological, and social mechanisms. 

8 of the 10 major disciplinary fields are represented: 

  • Biology, Medicine, and Health – 39% 
  • Agronomic and Ecological Sciences – 24% 
  • Human Sciences and Humanities – 16% 
  • Chemistry – 12% 
  • Earth and Space Sciences – 11%
